Glossary

Every acronym, in plain English.

The models are peer-reviewed; the labels are just shorthand. Here's what each one means, no sports-science degree required.
HRV
Heart rate variability. The tiny beat-to-beat variation in your heart rhythm; higher usually means better recovery.
RMSSD
The exact HRV figure VitalDial reads overnight (root mean square of successive differences). The most reliable one.
RHR
Resting heart rate. Your pulse at full rest; lower or falling is usually a good sign.
EWMA
Exponentially weighted moving average. A rolling average that leans on recent days. It's how your baseline is built.
CTL
Chronic training load. Your long-term fitness, a slow-moving average of training stress.
ATL
Acute training load. Your short-term fatigue, a fast-moving average of the last week or so.
TSB
Training stress balance: CTL minus ATL. Your form. Positive means fresh, negative means fatigued.
TRIMP
Training impulse. One number for how hard a session was, from its duration and heart rate.
ACWR
Acute:chronic workload ratio. Recent load against your norm; a sharp spike flags injury risk.
VO₂ max
The most oxygen your body can use flat out. The classic marker of aerobic fitness.
Critical Speed
The fastest pace you can hold aerobically for a long time. Better than ‘threshold’ for pacing a race.
Riegel
A formula that predicts your time at one distance from a result at another.

Eight scientific models.
One honest verdict, every morning.

How it works

Ingest, model, verdict: no black box.

Every coefficient is exposed in-app. Every transform is documented. If you'd like to argue with our model, you can, and you'll have the references to do it.
Race intelligence

Your current fitness, adjusted for today's fatigue.

Not a calculator. A verdict.

Predictions update daily using your full quality run history and current TSB. Confidence tiers automatically: high at 15+ quality runs, medium at 8–14, low below that.
Pricing

Three tiers. No usage caps.

All plans include full Apple Health sync, so VitalDial works with whatever you wear: Apple Watch, Fitbit, Oura, WHOOP, Garmin, and more. Free is genuinely useful, not a trap.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is my health data private?
Yes. Every score is calculated on your device. Your raw Apple Health data never leaves your phone and is never uploaded to our servers. When you ask the AI coach a question, only the computed metrics relevant to that question are sent, never your raw health data.
Which watches and devices work with it?
Anything that writes to Apple Health: Apple Watch, Fitbit, Oura, WHOOP, Garmin and more. VitalDial reads the data your devices already sync to Apple Health, so you keep the kit you have.
How is this different from the recovery score on my watch?
Your watch gives you one proprietary score with a confident number. VitalDial runs eight peer reviewed models and shows you the verdict and the reasoning behind it. Every coefficient is documented in the app, with references, so you can check the working.
Does it need time to learn me?
It builds a personal baseline from about 21 nights of HRV data, and it is honest about confidence. Race predictions tier automatically: high at 15 or more quality runs, medium at 8 to 14, lower below that. You always see how sure it is.
What does it actually tell me?
One verdict each morning: push, build, ease off, or rest. It reads HRV, resting heart rate, sleep debt, training load, VO2 max and race models, and gives you a single honest answer before you train.
Is it free? Can I cancel?
Free to start, and the free tier is genuinely useful rather than a trap. Pro and Elite add the AI coach and deeper race and fitness intelligence, with a 14 day free trial. Subscriptions are managed through the App Store, and you can cancel anytime.
Is it only for runners?
It is built for runners and endurance athletes, with a strength training profile too. Your training load thresholds personalise to your discipline, so the verdict fits how you actually train.
What platforms is it on?
VitalDial is on iOS, and syncs with Apple Health. An Android version is not available yet.
